Tungi Secondary School
Tungi Secondary School is located approximately 2kms from Mikadi and is our nearest local Secondary School.
The project has been developed with the co operation of Headmaster Mr Melisius D. Kayombo and involves Zimbabwean Photographer Hannah Mentz, who is now based in Cape Town.
Mikadi organised with Tungi and the Headmaster to identify 20 children for the Project. Hannah Mentz then travelled up from Cape Town with disposable cameras and conducted a lecture in basic photography held at Mikadi under the trees on the beach. After Hannah’s lesson each child was given one disposable camera and their task was to capture their daily lives and write a short essay about themselves.
When the photographs have been developed they will be judged worldwide by a panel from Mikadi and sponsors of the Project. The best photographs in four different categories:
- Portrait
- Scenery
- Activity
- Composition
will be given prizes and of course Tungi Secondary School will also benefit as Mikadi will donate goods to the school to the value of £1,000.
The aims of the Project are to identify children who have natural ability and skills to then go on to make photography part of their careers and promote our local community and show them the benefits of responsible tourism.
Further projects in “our” community are planned.
